(1)How do you feel about what happened to Kitty Genovese?
(2)Were the people who heard her being murdered obligated to help her? Explain.
(3)Is altruism (caring about others and trying to help them) a trait you are born with, or can it be taught?
(4)Studies have shown that a person is more likely to help if he or she is the only witness. Why do you think this is?
5. HW: Universe of Obligation Fishbowl Prep
1. In the “most comprehensive nationwide survey of the incidence and prevalence of children’s exposure to violence to date,” the United States Department of Justice found that “more than 60 percent of the children surveyed were exposed to violence within the past year, either directly or indirectly.” How do you think students are affected by the violence they witness?
2. What can schools do to ensure that the school environment is literally a safe space for students? Whose job is it to make schools safe—not just a “safe learning environment,” but a safe place for students to be?
3. Are there times when you could have intervened, but didn’t? Why did you not intervene?
4. Do you think the people who witnessed the Richmond rape and did nothing should be held responsible for their decision not to act? What would being held responsible look like?
5. Write down at least two of your own questions to ask during the fishbowl.
