HW: Censorship Fishbowl Prep

1. Is censorship ever necessary? Use “A Visit to Cuba” and “V for Vendetta” to support your opinion.
2. Are there ever times that others know what is best for you to read or watch? When?
3. Should people ever sacrifice their freedoms in order to stay safe? If one has to choose between freedom and safety, which is more important? Why?
4. Should dangerous information be censored?

You must write at least one paragraph for each question. Try to use as much textual evidence as you can (V for Vendetta, Cuba article, 1st Amendment, case study, "Into the Night Kitchen".

The government in V for Vendetta tried to suppress the truth about Larkhill Detention Center.

b. Censorship (noun) - the suppression of something regarded as objectionable
Some people regard censorship as a violation of the first amendment; others view it to be protecting the public from harm.

2. Read article about banned children's book.
“A Visit to Cuba” Controversy
Create two columns in your notebook. Once column is titled Reasons to ban “A Visit to Cuba”. The other column is titled, Reasons not to ban “A Visit to Cuba”.
Think of at least three reasons each side would argue.

HW: “A Visit to Cuba” Controversy
1. Do you think “A Visit to Cuba” should be banned? Why or why not? Explain your answer in at least ½ page.
2. Complete a Word Profile for “suppress”. Use the definition and sentence from your Do Now.
